48 Hours in Ho Chi Minh City: An Itinerary for First-Time Visitors
Not every trip leaves time to explore Ho Chi Minh City fully. Sometimes you are passing through between flights, sometimes you only have a weekend, and the question is always the same: how do you see enough of this city without racing? Below is the 48-hour plan CityHouse suggests for first-time visitors. The principle is simple: group sights that sit close together, rest when the sun is harshest, and leave a gap for the unexpected. If you have three days, 3 Days in Ho Chi Minh City: A Realistic Itinerary for First-Timers has a slower rhythm.
Optimizing 48 hours in Ho Chi Minh City: 3 rules to remember
First, stay in the center. With only two days, every long ride costs you half a session, so staying close to where you will go makes the plan lighter. Second, go early. It is cooler, the roads are quieter and the sights are not yet crowded, especially in the wet season when rain tends to arrive in the afternoon. Third, do not try to cram everything. Pick three or four stops a day and leave the rest for next time.
Day 1: Exploring historical landmarks and the city's ancient vibes
08:30, Independence Palace. Start early to avoid the sun and crowds. The main gate is at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, and our guide to Independence Palace in Ho Chi Minh City has information on hours and how to visit. Allow one to two hours to walk through the meeting rooms, reception rooms and command bunker.
11:00, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office. The two sit side by side, so it is an easy walk. The cathedral is under restoration, so you mostly view it from outside, and our guide to Notre-Dame Cathedral Saigon keeps visiting status up to date. The post office is still working, and its vaulted ceiling and old maps are well worth a look, as described in Saigon Central Post Office.
12:30, lunch and a rest. Have lunch around the center, then rest a while in your room. From about 12:00 to 15:00 the sun is harshest, and a short rest gives your late afternoon and evening more energy.
16:00, walk to Nguyen Hue and Bach Dang Wharf. Go from the Municipal Theatre along Nguyen Hue Walking Street and out to Bach Dang Wharf to watch sunset on the Saigon River. It is a great stretch for seeing both old and new Ho Chi Minh City.
18:30, dinner and perhaps a double-decker bus. If you still have energy, an open-top double-decker bus shows the city lit up. According to VOH, published in December 2023, the routes ran until around 22:00 with 1-hour, 4-hour or 24-hour ticket options, but hours may have changed, so confirm first. Or keep it simple: have dinner and walk back near your stay, and Ho Chi Minh City at Night has more ideas.
Day 2: Ben Thanh market, art, and Thao Dien
08:00, Fine Arts Museum. On Pho Duc Chinh street, the building is a lovely former mansion, and Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum sets out hours and tickets. It is a quiet, uncrowded way to open the day.
10:00, Ben Thanh Market. One hour is enough to walk the stalls, buy coffee, dried goods or souvenirs, and ask the price first at stalls without posted prices. Do not try to cover the whole market, since it is large and tiring.
11:30, Metro to Thao Dien. From Ben Thanh station, take Metro Line 1 to the east side. It is both a fast way to travel and a way to feel the city change pace, from the center to an area with more greenery and cafés. How to buy tickets and enter stations is covered in exploring Ho Chi Minh City by Metro.
12:30, lunch and a stroll in Thao Dien. A long lunch, a round of cafés and small shops, then a rest. The pace here is completely different from the morning in the center.
16:30, back to the center by river. If there is time, take the Saigon Water Bus from Thao Dien back to Bach Dang Wharf to end the trip with another view of the city, then collect your luggage and head to the airport.
Two-day itinerary at a glance
| Time | Day 1 | Day 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Independence Palace | Fine Arts Museum, Ben Thanh Market |
| Midday | Notre-Dame, Post Office, lunch | Metro to Thao Dien, lunch |
| Afternoon | Rest, then Nguyen Hue and Bach Dang | Thao Dien stroll, Water Bus to the center |
| Evening | Dinner, double-decker bus or a walk | Airport or a last dinner |
If it rains or you visit in the wet season
Change the order instead of dropping stops. Move indoor sites such as museums and cafés to the early afternoon, and keep outdoor activities for when it clears. A small umbrella and comfortable walking shoes are enough. If you prefer a slower itinerary for guests who already know the city, see a day in central HCMC.
