Being near the airport doesn't mean you have to choose this area just because you've booked a flight. The airport area is really only worth it if the nature of your trip calls for that convenience. Staying near the airport makes sense if you have an early flight, arrive in Ho Chi Minh City late at night, are on a short 1 to 3 day business trip, work in Tan Binh, need to fly frequently, or have a schedule that involves the northern part of the city a lot. From the airport area, you can also reach Phu Nhuan and District 3 fairly conveniently.

5–7 days Daily comfort matters more

As the stay stretches out, distance deserves more consideration. Beyond location, weigh room size, living space, a desk, a kitchen or dining area if needed, in-stay services, nearby restaurants and convenience stores, how quiet the area is, and access to the Metro or public transport. A property a few extra minutes from work but better suited to daily life can sometimes offer a better experience over a longer stay.

If most of your trip lies along Metro Line 1, being near a station is an advantage. The Metro is especially useful for trips between Ben Thanh, the Opera House, Ba Son, Thao Dien, An Phu, and the eastern part of the city. That said, the Metro doesn't yet cover the whole of Ho Chi Minh City. If your trip is centered on District 7, the airport, or other areas not near the line, distance to the Metro shouldn't be the deciding factor for where you stay.

A fairly common mistake is searching for "hotel near Tan Son Nhat Airport" right after booking a flight. That only makes sense if the airport is genuinely relevant to most of the trip. If you're flying into Ho Chi Minh City once, staying in the city for 5 days, and your schedule is mostly in District 1, staying downtown usually makes more sense than staying right by the airport for the whole trip. Look at the 4 to 5 days after landing, not just the first 30 minutes of the trip.
